Sarah Hanssen

Business Impact and Evaluation

Sarah Hanssen has 20 years of international experience working with global organizations, businesses, investors, and governments, including extensive work in eastern Africa and in fragile and conflict affected contexts. She works with organizations to enhance and evaluate their impact and effectiveness, including developing Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning systems, carrying out program and portfolio-level evaluations, conducting environmental and social impact assessments, and facilitating learning exercises.

Her sector experience spans renewable energy, agribusiness and agri-food markets, climate security and resilience, gender, security and justice sector reform, conflict-sensitivity, and peacebuilding. Her clients have included renewable energy companies, UN agencies, UN multi-partner trust funds, the UK government, US-government funded programs, private foundations, and NGOs.

Recent advisory engagements have included: impact evaluations and market studies to inform investment funds and programs in agriculture, food security, distributed renewable energy, and climate resilience in East Africa; business, environmental and social advisory to renewable energy projects being developed and operated in fragile contexts in Africa; advisory on integrating gender, inclusion and conflict sensitivity within multilateral and bilateral development programs, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, youth participation and leadership; security sector and disarmament; soldier demobilization and reintegration programs and interventions; and designing and advising on the execution of monitoring and evaluation systems. 

Sarah holds an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a BA from Brown University, USA.
